Sleep + CBD? How it’s Worked for Me

Sleep is becoming more of a common concern in modern society as our days and nights are filled with a lot more stimuli while our jobs are becoming more demanding of our time and energy.

Our fitness and diets are common topics when addressing our health, but the importance of our sleep should not be overlooked when discussing health and wellness. There isn’t enough emphasis on sleep and how important it is to our wellbeing. However, people are becoming more aware of how truly important sleep is to our general wellbeing and success.

As someone who has previously been diagnosed with insomnia, I have had a history of using a variety of medications, homeopathic remedies, sleep exercises and making lifestyle changes in order to address my sleepless nights. 

Cannabidiol is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant also known as CBD. Cannabinoids interact with your endocannabinoid system and research suggests that it helps our bodies maintain a state of balance and stability, or homeostasis. Cannabinoids are the chemical compounds produced by the secretion of the cannabis plant.

Cannabinoids such as CBD are said to be beneficial to your endocannabinoid system because it helps activate and maintain our endocannabinoids, which our bodies naturally produce. When you consume cannabis, the cannabinoids bind to receptor sites throughout our brain known as CB-1 receptors and our body known as CB-2 receptors. 

Around 4 years ago I read about the benefits of CBD which includes aiding in insomnia and 2 years ago I finally decided to give this cannabinoid a try. A neighbor gave me a sample of a CBD capsule and for the first time that week, I finally got a good night sleep. 

At the time I was dealing with a lot of anxiety, unhappiness and even some depression. Things happening externally in my world started to affect me internally and began facing consecutive sleepless nights for over a week.

During this time, I also stopped taking anti-anxiety pills that were prescribed to aid in my sleep. Looking for an alternative approach, it made sense to try CBD in relation to my sleep.  The results were felt instantly; whenever I took a CBD capsule an hour before bedtime, I was able to finally reach a place of serenity and calm so I could finally catch some Z’s. Thanks to CBD, now I sleep every single night. Although my sleep duration varies, the quality of my sleep has improved so much since taking CBD at night.

To address my sleeping issues,  I consume a combination of 100mg of tincture either from Space Grade Labs “Rest” CBD or Tonic’s “Chill” CBD and about 30 mg of a CBD edible such as Grön CBD dark chocolate or Winged CBD’s “Sleepy” gummies in order to reach a place of tranquility in my well-being and calm in my mind to achieve a night of sleep. My night time regiment starts with 100 mg of tincture an hour prior to my bedtime and then 30 mg of CBD edibles 10 minutes prior to my bedtime.
